Sukkot - The Feast of Tabernacles
"The Time of our Rejoicing!...and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. ~Leviticus 23:40
Is there anything to do after atonement but rejoice?
Sukkot is also known as the Feast of Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths. God had delivered His people out of Egypt. While Moses was on the mountain receiving the law, the people made a golden calf to worship. God forgave them, but they had to wander about the desert 40 years before coming to the promised land.
During that time, they lived in booths,
or temporary houses, as they traveled through the desert. God commands
them to keep a yearly feast to celebrate this time, and He even instructs
them to live in booths for seven days.
That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. ~Leviticus 23:43.
And my absolute favorite part - God tells His people to rejoice!
and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. ~Leviticus 23:40
I imagine myself there, in a hot, dry, desert - no home, just a booth to live in. And the reason for the rejoicing in the desert? The presence of God! He went with His people, He guided His people, and He provided for His people. But even more important, He provided a way for Atonement for His people.
For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the works of your hand: He knows your walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing. ~Deuteronomy 2:7
