Shavuot is the Hebrew word for weeks. It takes place 7 weeks from the 2nd day of Passover, or exactly 50 days after Passover. The Greek word for the holiday is Pentecost, which means 50.
It is the spring, or wheat, harvest festival. The first fruits, Bikkurim, were brought into the temple in decorated baskets.
It was a time when His people were required to give back to Him. And as it is impossible, to out give God, He gave even more on that day. It was on that day that God gave Moses the law on Mount Sinai. It was also on that day, many years later, that God sent His Holy Spirit to fall upon 120 disciples who were praying in Jerusalem.
