Purim The Purim holiday comes from the Book of Esther. It is a story of deliverance and salvation of God's people from the evil one who tries to destroy them. Haman, the evil one, cast lots, or Pur, to select the month that he would destroy God's people. He had planned to destroy all the Jews on the 13th day of Adar. It was through fasting, intercession, and courage that his evil plan failed. Purim is celebrated on the 14th (15th for walled cities) of Adar, the 12th month of the Jewish calendar. Adar occurs in February and March. |

Purim is a festive holiday. The entire Book of Esther , the Megillat Esther, is read. (The phrase "the whole megillah" comes from this tradition. Megillah is a word meaning scroll and the whole story is read on this day. You can read the King James translation of the Book of Esther online here.) Whenever the name of Haman is mentioned during the reading, the audience hisses, stamps their feet, and/or spin graggers, noise makers, to drown out his name. Children dress in costumes and the story is reenacted in pageants and plays. The commandment of Mordecai and Esther to celebrate and feast on this day is honored, as well as the Shalach Manos, the sending out of gifts. Baskets of food and presents are made and given to the poor and to family and friends. It is a day to rejoice in God's deliverance and God's salvation. It is the story of the Great Intercessor who risks His life to save mankind from the destruction of the evil one. |
